Is Made in Abyss Finished? Manga & Anime (2023 Update)

Made in Abyss is a manga written and drawn by Akihito Tsukushi. It has been published online since October 2012; eight tankōbon volumes have been released as of July 2017. An anime adaptation by studio Kinema Citrus is broadcast from July 7, 2017, to September 29, 2017, adapting chapters 1 to 26 (volumes 1 to 3). Two recap films of Season 1 were released in Japan on January 4 and 18, 2019 in Japan. A third film adapting chapters 27 to 38 (volumes 4 and 5 of the manga) was released in Japan on January 17, 2020. A second season also aired in 2022. Made in Abyss is still not over, both manga and anime series are ongoing. Made in Abyss is a series consisting of two works – a manga series, and an anime series – and both of these works are still ongoing and are not finished. The manga series has been ongoing since October 20, 2012, and has 11 volumes as of the time of writing, while the anime series has been ongoing since July 7, 2017; although a third season has not been confirmed it is likely going to be. There is no foreseeable ending for any of these works as of the time of writing.

Is the Made in Abyss manga over?

Written and illustrated by Akihito Tsukushi, the Made in Abyss manga series began publication on Takeshobo’s Manga Life Win+, later rebranded as Web Comic Gamma, website on October 20, 2012; the work continues with its most recent chapters being published in Japanese and made available for free reading on the platform. The service even releases, for those who are not familiar with the whole story, the first and oldest chapters in the same manner. With the success of the series, publisher Takeshobo collected its chapters, compiling them into tankōbon volumes for distribution as of July 31, 2013. Currently, there are 11 volumes:

In 2017, and with the series gearing up for the release of its sixth volume, the publisher simultaneously released an anthology titled Irredeemable Cave Raiders, containing four illustrations and fifteen humorous stories about the universe of Made in Abyss by different artists. As of the time of writing this article, the Made in Abyss manga series is quite alive and well. There are absolutely no signs of cancelation, and while the story certainly is slowly approaching its final arc, there is no news about any cancelation or the series reaching its end as of this moment, which means that there is still a lot more of the manga to enjoy.

Is the Made in Abyss anime over?

The story of Made in Abyss received an anime adaptation by studio Kinema Citrus, airing on Japanese channels AT-X, Tokyo MX, TV Aichi, Sun TV, KBS Kyoto, TVQ, Saga TV, and BS11 between July 7 and September 29, 2017. The series was directed by Masayuki Kojima and written by Hideyuki Kurata, with a total of thirteen episodes, the last of which was a one-hour special. Kazuchika Kise also participated in this work, as a character designer, and the Australian musician Kevin Penkin, in the composition of the soundtrack.

In March 2018, the studio announced, on the anime’s official website, the release of two films containing compilations of episodes from the television series. The first, titled Made in Abyss: Journey’s Dawn, was released on January 4, 2019 (adapting episodes 1-8), and the second, Made in Abyss: Wandering Twilight, was released on January 18, 2019 (encompassing episodes 9-13).

Shortly after the end of the first season, a sequel film Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul was announced and released on January 17, 2020. Plans for a continuation of the television series were also announced. The second season was announced in May 2021 as Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun. The series was broadcast from July 6, 2022, to September 28, 2022.

This season was a direct sequel to the end of the film Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul, which itself was the sequel to Season 1 and takes up the manga adaptation from Volume 6. Riko Azuna performed the opening credits titled “Katachi”, while Myth and Roid performs the ending credits titled “Endless Embrace”.

In America, the anime arrived licensed by Sentai Filmworks and was aired in simulcast format for a simultaneous release of the Japanese transmission, through Amazon’s streaming service, Anime Strike. Other regions outside the United States were able to pick up the series through HIDIVE or Crunchyroll, depending on the country.

Everything we’ve said about the manga above can be applied to the anime series as well. Although we haven’t received official confirmation of a third season or Made in Abyss, the popularity of the manga and the initial anime adaptations make it almost a certain thing, so we can confirm that the anime is not over either and that we are going to see more of the anime in the future. We just don’t know when.
