MANG’s story
MANG is a mysterious masked dancing pony. He’s cooler than ever when he dances, and one day he’ll be the dancing king! Everyone admires him when he dances and the other BT21 members often get mesmerized by his moves.
Music has always been MANG’s way of communication, his first cry resembled a trap beat and nowadays he expresses himself through dance.
The one who taught MANG dance is his mentor CONN. CONN is a superstar from Horsetown who mentored two wannabes, MANG and the jealous GWANG. The two students confronted each other in dance competitions! More info can be found in MANG’s childhood memories and in his episode of BT21 UNIVERSE 2 ANIMATION.
It’s with all these talents that MANG has joined the BT21 to become a universtar and the king of dance!
Once he succeeds, he’ll take off his mask.
As BTS started their chapter 2, j-hope came back to LINE to write a new story for MANG, without his mask this time, Inside MANG. Mang’s true face was revealed on April 5 and seems to be based on a squirrel (note that j-hope was associated with a horse emoji then with the squirrel one so it could be his inspiration). Mang is also now associated with heart-shaped smile (one of j-hope’s trait).
In episode 14 of Inside MANG, we see MANG using a golden toilet brush, probably a nod to the one Jin gifted to j-hope in 2022 (src #1, src #2, src #3).
MANG’s personality traits
MANG always wears a horse mask so no one knew his true face until he joined the BT21. Then, as he had to take it off a few times, RJ and SHOOKY saw him. The mask seems to not be rigid but rather fitting on MANG’s head like a balaclava. He has got several ones.
Despite the mask, MANG can see, drink, put flowers and leaves, play trombone, and snore through the nostrils of his heart-shaped nose. It doesn’t work for food though…
The mask has one more function: the tail moves when Mang is happy or excited!
Basically, it’s a mask with a heart-shaped nose and a lot of ways of using it!
MANG knows all kinds of dance moves including the moonwalk and the windmill. He can also skateboard, he’s a real athlete! He even gives private skateboarding lessons.
(Sidenote: in the picture on the right, it seems Shooky is listening to “Moon blue” by Stevie Wonder.)
As such a sportsman, MANG also appears to be especially strong, or heavy, or both. All we know is that most of the time you can’t make him budge.
MANG’s love for the BT21 members is larger than anything else but he especially likes CHIMMY’s pinchable cheeks and TATA’s kissable heart-shaped head. There’s even “Love of my life” written on MANG’s skateboard ramp, next to a drawing of TATA. Note that this sentence could actually be about skateboarding though.
Fun facts
- j-hope characterized MANG as the only purple horse in Horsetown (S2E02) and as a mute character whose moves have sound effects, especially when he walks (S2E03)
- MANG’s ultimate goal is to take off his mask and to be loved for himself (a nod to BTS’ series Love Yourself). RM suggested that in the BT21 universe, MANG would be the origin of “borahae” (the expression invented by V to represent the love between BTS and ARMY). Indeed, borahae means “I purple you” in Korean, reminding of MANG’s color, but it can also mean “watch me”, hinting at the desire of MANG to be looked at when he’ll take off his mask
